Your Personal Guide to AWS re:Invent 2017

Secure the Strange Things Happening in Your Cloud

Booth #204 | November 27 – December 1 | Las Vegas, NV

Are you attending the AWS re:Invent conference next week?

There’s a lot happening this year, so we thought we’d publish a brief guide to help you get the most out of it.

If you’re not able to attend, stay tuned to our blog. We’ll be providing updates in real time and after the event, we’ll be sharing highlights as well as a few additional goodies.

Meet The Threat Stack Team

This year, we’re sending our biggest team ever to re:Invent. To make it easy for you to meet up with us, here’s a recap of where we’ll be and what we’ll be doing:

Threat Stack Booth (#204)

  • We’ll be demoing our intrusion detection platform to show you how to secure the Strange Things happening in your AWS environment.
  • If you’re working on a security or compliance project, our experts will be on hand to answer all your questions on how to meet compliance regulations in the cloud, uphold your end of the AWS shared responsibility model, and gain the security insights you need to scale your company with confidence.
  • And, there will be games, raffles, and lots of cool goodies!!

Sam Bisbee, Threat Stack CSO, Presentation

Sam is delivering a talk called Stop Wasting Your Time: Focusing on Security Practices That Actually Matter. With the volume of vendors out there and the nonstop media coverage, it can be tough to know where to start with

security. This will be a great opportunity to hear Sam share his expertise on how to calculate your organization’s risk, devise a realistic defense strategy for your cloud workloads, and take action using both built-in and other tools.

  • Join Sam in the Demo Theater on Wednesday, November 29th at 3:20 p.m.
  • P.S. As a bonus, we’ll be raffling off a $350 Ghostbuster Lego set!

Pub Crawl | Enter the Upside Down

  • We hope you interested in Free Beer and a trip back to the ‘80s. Join us at Buddy V’s from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 29th. We’ve got old school arcade games, green screen magic, and many other Stranger Things!

Threat Stack Session Recommendations

There’s a huge amount to see and do with over a 1,000 breakout sessions, multiple hackathons, bootcamps, and workshops. Here are a few sessions we’re particularly excited about:

ABD207 – Leveraging AWS to Fight Financial Crime and Protect National Security

As you may know, some new laws coming out of New York are going to have a big impact on the way cybersecurity is enacted in the Financial Services sector. While this session isn’t directly geared toward these laws, it will center on how some banks are joining forces to fight back against cybercrime today. It promises to be a lively discussion, and we’re all about seeing the “good guys” band together to do what it takes to make the internet and our financial system safer places.

ABD310 – How FINRA Secures Its Big Data and Data Science Platform on AWS

Ever wonder how government agencies and regulators manage to keep their data secure? In this breakout session, FINRA will offer a unique glimpse into how they use big data and data science technologies to detect fraud, market manipulation, and insider trading across U.S. capital markets. In this day and age, it’s valuable to understand the security tools that underpin our institutions. Additionally, FINRA will cover some of the AWS best practices they use to ensure that they are able to take advantage of the cloud without exposing themselves.

SID206 – Best Practices for Managing Security Operations on AWS

If you want to prevent unwelcome access to your AWS resources, you need to implement and maintain strong identity and access policies in your environment. You need to be alerted whenever changes happen so you can track them and react when they indicate anomalous behavior. In this session, Netflix teams up with AWS to share how they handle IAM and change management for their large and complex organization, including detail on policies they implement and how they have operationalized monitoring at scale.

SID208 – Less (Privilege) Is More: Getting Least-Privilege Right in AWS

It may not sound like the sexiest topic on the surface, but getting user privileges right is important, and the principle of least-privilege access is key to security on AWS. This session should be an excellent dovetail to the one described above, going into even further detail on how to implement and maintain least-privilege access in your AWS environment to keep it as secure as possible.

SID304 – SecOps 2021 Today: Using AWS Services to Deliver SecOps

If you’ve been reading the Threat Stack blog for awhile, you know we’re big fans of SecOps — the practice of applying DevOps principles to the world of security and bringing development, operations, and security teams into a tight alignment to achieve success at scale. In this talk, Netflix and AWS will again join forces to offer a live demo (not a bunch of dry slides) showing how to put SecOps to work in a real environment. For folks who see SecOps as a “future state,” this talk will help you get to the reality faster.

Other Can’t-Miss Happenings at re:Invent

In addition to informative keynote and breakout sessions, there are a ton of hands-on opportunities scattered throughout the week of re:Invent. You can see the full agenda here. Some of the ones we are looking forward to include:

Alexa Hack Your Office

Okay, we admit it! We’re nerds for IoT. This session promises to be fun, sharing how you can use Alexa and other smart devices to make your workplace more fun, productive, and techy. (By the way, did you know there are some 42 IoT-related presentations at re:Invent this year? Gives you an indication of what’s on a lot of minds these days.)

Smart Cities Hackathon

Civic spaces often lag behind commercial enterprises when it comes to adopting new technology, but that is changing fast. As technology becomes more ubiquitous and more accessible, we are seeing a move toward “smart cities.” This hackathon will give participants a chance to play around and think creatively while helping to solve problems around social good, infrastructure, health, education, entertainment, and sustainability.

Robocar Rally

If you are excited about the future of autonomous and smart vehicles, you can’t miss the Robocar Rally. It’s a hackathon that will offer hands-on experience with autonomous cars and Amazon AI and IoT services. Learn about what’s happening at the bleeding edge of autonomous vehicles while also joining a pit crew to customize, train, and race your own 1/16th scale autonomous car.

Final Words . . .

Of course we hope to see you in Las Vegas. But if you can’t make it, keep an eye out here for updates during the conference as well as a detailed wrap-up of highlights after the event.
